Café in New Town Center? Yes or No?

Primary tabs

Impact

Impact:
The Town of Atherton has plans to build a new town center. Some residents have suggested we need a small café for people to come together and meet without having to travel to other towns. For a variety of reasons, others are opposed to this idea. We would like to get your input.

Debate Summary

Present your argument:

Recently, the Atherton City Council agreed that the new Civic Center would be well served by having a place where local residents can meet, gather and exchange ideas. The Council believes that this informal space could be served by a small cafe - something similar to Ada’s Cafe in Palo Alto. Nothing fancy. Nothing formal. Merely the opportunity to share a cup of coffee or tea, a croissant, or a sandwich.

The space could be an opportunity for local youth employment, a small caterer, a non-profit. The size, location, needs, and design of the space has not yet been worked out; but the Council believes that such a place would conveniently enable residents to meet in Atherton, and that's what a community is all about.

We know there are issues with a commercial business in our town. So if you disagree, now is the time to speak up.

Thanks for letting us know what you think.

Great point about the cost. I think the town center will be funded by private money. Not taxpayers.

Someone said this to me today. A community gathering place solves the problem of loneliness in gated communities. Nice.

There are lots of walkers in town so how nice to be able to have a café in our neighborhood without going on El Camino.

I think it's a great idea to have a fun meeting place, but it would depend on how it was run. Would a lease be granted?

I love meeting neighbors for coffee, stopping by the library and post office all in a single trip. Creating community!

Most of the Altherton people do not know each other because of our gated estate and lifestyle. Beneficial to us !!

I thought there were no commercial businesses allowed in Atherton. Wouldn't this constitute a commercial business ?

Offhand, I think this would be a splendid idea, but I came to this iLobby site to learn more about why we should not.

This can't be subsidized in any way, including rent, supplies, labor. There is no way this will be financially viable.

It needs to be made clear to those voting that we citizens of Atherton will be asked to PAY for this cafe.
