Pets are not Property

Primary tabs

Impact

Impact:
People found responsible in the neglect or abuse of their pets would be charged accordingly, their records reflective of such, and the implications on par with those that abuse children. As a result, pets lives would no longer be discarded and would be given the same weight, depth, and value of that of a human child.

Debate Summary

Present your argument:

Sadly, in the state of Florida, pets are considered property in the eyes of the law. Unfortunately, while they often suffer the same plights as children in terms of neglect, abuse, etc. the laws do not provide or protect them in the same way. Pets should be awarded the same protections and rights of that of a human child. The law that governs pets needs to change and we desperately need to be that voice.

Additional Information

Additional Description:
I have worked in the animal welfare industry for several years and feel the plight of these animals on a daily basis. They suffer at the hands of their human companions and even their families after their companion has either fallen ill or passed away. Their life has value and we need to be their voice.
