Thousands of Californians gamble on sports every years whether they do it legally or not. The 6-3 Supreme Court decision to strike down the federal prohibition on sports gambling opens up the door for millions of dollars to be taxed and used by the state. For example, Indian reservations in California alone brought in $400+ million in state and local taxes alone.
The Indian reservations are able to do this because they own exclusivity rights to sports betting in the state of California. If California allows other gambling entities to operate sports gambling on their facilities then there is a chance that these Indian Reservations will look to be compensated for possibly losing out on millions of dollars.
Additional Information
Additional Description:
With ongoing health and housing issues all over the state of California, a nice stream of additional money flowing into the state would be well received. As previously mentioned, thousands of people gamble either legally or illegally so why shouldn’t the state get a share of that money? Money that can be used for public service. It could take months or even a couple of years before casual and everyday gambling is a norm in California. We need to make sure that this issue gets the proper support so that the state of California and its residents can benefit.
