Protecting Americans from Dangerous Opioids Act - S.419

Primary tabs

Impact

Impact:
This is a multi-stakeholder problem with legal ways of distributing painkillers and alternatively illegal drugs on the street. Patients suffering are looking for a pain remedy but there are some unscrupulous doctors who may be over-prescribing. Once a patient or user becomes addicted it's all over. Their life spirals downward and the cost to society is very high.

Debate Summary

Present your argument:

There are over 25 proposed bills in the House and Senate related to opioids, drug addiction, education, etc. Most are in the Energy and Commerce committee, a few are in the Judiciary and Veterans Affairs. A search for "opioid" at https://www.congress.gov will bring up the following: S.2772, HR 4969, HR 4981, HR 4976, HR 4918, S 2423, HR 3677, HR 2805, HR 2872, HR 1821, S 1641 and the list goes on.

What is the point of all this? To get a handle on this epidemic.

If you want to make a difference, support a bill with others who are concerned about the future of the country. You can start by voting yes on HR 4447. Eventually, if enough rational citizens begin to connect the dots between the problem, the solution and the committees deciding on the issue, you can make a difference.

Links to the legislation, the committees and other media sources are listed below.

Additional Information

Additional Description:
The bill numbers have changed but every year more people die. S.419 is in the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions committee. The bill requires the Food and Drug Administration to revoke the approval of one opioid pain medication for each new opioid pain medication approved. The sponsor is Sen. Manchin, Joe, III [D-WV]. Congress finds that: (1) Opioids killed more than 33,000 people in the United States in 2015, more than any year on record.
